We’re a little bit country! <3 (Taken with instagram)

I started Tuesday and I love it! I’m working at the Department of Social Services Legal Department. Nassau County is weird because they have DSS attorneys who draft the child protection petitions (initial neglect/abuse petitions, termination of parental rights, guardianship, etc. etc. etc.) and another set of attorneys in the family court who receive those petitions and do the actual litigation. Strange. But I was in the fam court all Spring and now I’m at DSS on the other side of things. I LOVE IT.

Today was my 3rd day and one of my bosses says “I can tell you have experience so I gave you your own case.” He gave me a huge responsibility. I am writing the petition to terminate parental rights of 2 parents. The child has been in foster care for 4 years so I have to go back to 2008 at the beginning and draft the petition including all of the facts that show the Department made reasonable efforts to reunify the family and the parents failed to plan for the future of their child. Eeek. That’s such an important task but they trust me enough already :)

It’s going to be a great summer!

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”
“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car.
The sand is everything else. The small stuff.”
“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.
Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

My all access pass to, well, everywhere. I’m a nerd who gets excited about this stuff. (Taken with instagram)

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it’s mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life’s gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

Some photos from Summer so far from the following events:

  • GardenParty: The GP was a fabulous afternoon where we brought a little class to the hood we live in. Everyone dressed accordingly, we ate cucumber sandwiches, drank rum punch and other delicious drinks, and even threw in some croquet. It was a nice afternoon different from your typical house party.
  • Day Finals Ended Celebration: There’s a pic of me showing Nic how to use a keg. Useful skill now that she’s 23. She clearly didn’t learn in college lol
  • Graduation Party/B-day: Rooftop at the Bentley hotel overlooking the East River for Lindsay’s grad party. It was amazing! So much fun. And then some further fun at a boy we go to school with’s birthday where we met up with Ali.

I want to be lucky…
